Full Moon

In the  indigo essence of Wolf Moon, our touring skis creaked and buzzed in temperatures that turned snow flakes to ice crystals. Through the towering trees, the moon's pale glow banded the trail with ghostly light. Stars pricked the quilt of heaven. What was beyond our night vision lay in unknowable darkness. My heart beat in time to the night's song. I listened for coyotes' howls, maybe gathering for the hunt, but their tracks were our only (known) company. Perhaps they stood in the shadows, hackles rising, watching the strange creatures gliding in moonbeams through their territory.

I'm observing carefully for January's

  4. Barb, thank you SO for leaving your comment on my blog so I could find your beautiful writing. Like the ladies before me, your prose is lovely, and I can feel the night, the cold, the wild animals, nature at its best.

If only I could write as well. Maybe I can learn a thing or two from you!

  5. Haunting, magical, are words that come to mind. In norwegian we would say that the photo has "troll mood". It's just gorgeous! The description of your ski trip is no less magical. The feeling of possible hidden eyes following you - haunting and magical!

  9. What a lovely evocation of your world. How different to most. It was bright moonlight here last night - now I wish I'd walked in it.

  11. Wow. "Stars pricked the quilt of heaven." This 'stone' is entry to a novel, to a story that winds us in to a place we'd want to be.

  13. That's beautiful Barb (picture and words). Sort of hard to believe that we had the same full moon here in Florida (yeah, I know the science, but still......)

  15. Photos & prose compliment and enhance each other. Full moons create such an atmosphere! We currently have a moon which rises along a hill line...no trees though where I am.

  16. Must be very frightning to sit outside in the dark, the full moon and the howl of the coyotes.

    Greetings,

  24. I feel like that I’m seeing one page of a picture book. Your photography is so superb with such low light. I think I can understand why coyotes howl toward the full moon which is mysteriously enchanting.

  27. I'm catching up, Barb! So beautiful! Your words enticed me to wander with you through the night, even though it scares me in real life to be among the wild animals, and venturing along dark paths.

Love your deep look into these moments in time.
