Delphinium

Deep inside the seed husk still resides
A faded memory of summer's color

(In the winter of my Life, the girl still lurks close to the surface)

A River of Stones

  1. And delphiniums are one of my favorite northern flowers. I loved this one, Barb. Such fun, these pebbles in the river.

  2. Don't you wonder if plants have memories? Very lovely, Barb.

  3. I like the metaphor between flower and self, although I suspect the girl that lurks close to the surface is still a vivid as her own summers.

  4. This time of year when I look at my sweet apple trees... covered with icy frost, I think of the green that lies beneath ♥ and say a little prayer.

  5. Of course she does. We are never old in our dreams. Beautiful.

  6. I love these words - and the fact that the girl, like summer's colour, is just there below winter's surface waiting for the sun - although she's certainly already in evidence on your sidebar photo - which is bursting with energy and life!

  7. Oh, Barb, please don’t associate your current life with winter. Instead I’d rather say autumn, the time of harvest, and yes, you’re really harvesting what you’ve accumulated within yourself. Not only you feel that summer girl lurking close to surface but also your loved husband or old friends would feel the same sparkles in you as you would possessed.

  8. I can identify well with the girl lurking close to the surface. I wonder if we'll always feel that way.

  9. We never think of ourselves as older than a girl - no matter what stage of life we're in. So nice to see it compared to Dephinium seeds.

  10. And the memory awakens, the seeds pop in spring!

  11. I wouldn't look at this stage as winter. I like the notion of autumn - of reaping what we have been sowing, mature flowers, surer of ourselves than in the riot of the summer of our lives.

  12. I'm with others who've commented: An autumn harvest metaphor seems much more appropriate, and yes, that girl is really all we ever know of ourselves, isn't she? She's the core, there forever.
