Is There a Silver Lining - Small Stone - 6

clouds with silver linings

I've had a series of upsets over the past couple days. It started on July 4th when a tourist across the street allowed a dog to run loose through the neighborhood. The dog loved whizzing through our gardens and playing in our water feature. I finally went onto the front deck and spoke to the man watching the dog on its path of destruction. I asked him politely to please put the dog on a leash. I told him the dog was destroying the flower beds, and I didn't want it on my property. I mentioned that Breckenridge has a leash law. The man obviously had no control over the dog because calling him only led to frustration. Finally, he swore (either at me or the dog) and walked toward his rental. The dog finally followed.

About 15 minutes later a woman came outside, again with the dog running wild. I went onto the deck and asked politely if she would leash the dog because it was destroying my flower beds. NO she would NOT! She felt the dog had a right to run. I mentioned that Breckenridge has a leash law. She cared not at all. After she called me a "dickwad" and some other choice words, I came inside and called the rental complaint hotline. I had to call them 3 times that day, July 4th, because the dog continued to run. On the morning of July 5th, the dog tried to attack my neighbor who was out early walking her dog (on leash). The neighbor yelled for the woman to control her dog, but the woman obviously had no control. Luckily, my neighbor carries pepper spray and used it to drive the dog off.

My neighbor called the hot line when she got home, and she also contacted me. I called the hotline for the 4th time and was assured that (finally) an officer would be dispatched. By the time the police woman arrived, the people with the dog had left the rental to go home. The officer talked to the people still in the house explaining the leash law. She got the number of the dog owners and was going to also call them. Basically, my neighbor plus Bob and I were just happy to be rid of the threat and the fiasco of these entitled dog owners.

So! Later today I'll do my Loving Kindness Prayer. As usual, I'll think of ways I hope to improve myself and ask for guidance. I'll insert the names of family and friends to whom I want to send lovingkindness. And lastly, I'll include the dog and its owners, asking for lovingkindness to guide them on future encounters (hopefully not with me...).

I try to look for good - for the silver lining.
On some occasions, it's harder than others to find it.

I looked "dickwad" up in the dictionary.
It's a noun meaning a contemptible person; a fool.
I had a feeling it wasn't complimentary!

Sorry this is such a long small stone!

Gratitiude - Small Stone - 19

Bach's Prelude in C Major for piano
closing my eyes, tears wash my face
my heart swells with love and gratitude

What We Sow, We Reap - Small Stone - 10

As a baby, a toddler, and a little boy, our oldest grandson spent a lot of time with us.
We shared our love of the outdoors with him and our respect for nature.

Now, he's a big boy, a young man - he'll turn 18 next month.
He still likes spending time outdoors, learning from Nature.
He enjoys backpacking, rock climbing, biking, and skiing.
When I see photos of him balancing hundreds of feet up on a rock face, I get nervous.
I think he likes to scare his Grammy a little bit when he texts me photos of his adventures.
I warn him, "Be careful!"

He's an excellent photographer.
I first handed him my camera when he was 5.
Now he has his own DSLR cameras and lenses.
His photos of wildlife and landscapes are amazing.

Excuse an old Grammy for bragging.
Sometimes, what we sow, we reap.

I'm proud of you Ben!

The photo was taken by one of his friends. I watermarked it because I prefer it not be reused.
Aren't the colors in the rock amazing?

Peace and Love Abide with You

March was hectic with record snowfall and company.
We had family visiting over their spring breaks from school.

The push/pull of the seasons continues.
April is sometimes mild and sometimes chilly.
Snow continues to fall, but melt is underway.
The dirt road where I normally walk is a muddy mess.
Winter still dominates at high altitude.
It often grips the landscape through May.

I got a new "smart" sports watch this week.
I didn't want one that I could use as a phone or camera.
I did want one that has great battery life and has navigation tools for hiking/biking.
I also wanted a wrist heart rate monitor.
Unfortunately, the Garmin Instinct is smarter than I am, so it took me hours to set it up.

Today, the watch and I went on the Rec Path to walk 5 miles.
I walked - the watch told me many things (some of which I didn't need to know).
It was a sunny, blue-sky day with temps 10-15 degrees above freezing.
As usual, I smiled most of the way.

even Kachina and the Eagle were smiling

Did you know that just the act of smiling is very beneficial to your health?
I always start the day by looking at myself in the mirror and smiling.
I smile at random people, and they return the favor.
A smile is like a yawn - the brain automatically responds to a smile with a smile.
When I pass people, I bless them by thinking, "May peace and love abide with you."
I do this for animals, too.

the Blue River is free from ice and snow at some places

Today, beside people smiles, I received a smile from a large Malamute dog.
(Perhaps he sensed my blessing...)

I've been doing a lot of reading about new brain research.
I'm watching podcasts on brain/heart/gut connections.
I hope to share some of the things I'm learning in future posts.

I'd encourage you to smile more often.
See if your attitude doesn't change.
I bet you'll feel more positive about your life.
I think it will help you find One Good Thing.

May Peace and Love abide with you.

Home Sweet Home

Barb skiing Vail

We arrived back home in Colorado a month ago.
Early snow painted our property and the mountains white.

frost on the window of our room in Vail

Cancer treatment takes a toll physically, mentally, and emotionally.
First the diagnosis, then the research, and finally the treatment are all-consuming.

our backyard

In the intricate medical maze that is cancer treatment, there are many questions without answers.
Each person/family must endlessly advocate for the patient.

Bob skiing Breckenridge

We're back to our normal routines.
We exercise daily, eat healthy, and take time to relax.
We keep moving - there is so much to see and do and enjoy each day.

We appreciate people's prayers and positive thoughts on our behalf.
We give and receive affection.

We know that connection and love are healing.

the purity of white calms us

In this post, I share some photos of our beautiful, snowy landscape in CO.

However, the final photo is one of my favorites from our time in CA.
Nature manages to nurture us in many ways.

My friend sent me this quote from the Dalai Lama:
"There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly live."

Happy New Year to all!

Time to Observe and Appreciate

Our rental condo sits on a cliff overlooking the ocean.

The sound of the surf is always present.

The roar and hiss permeate both my sleeping and waking hours.

We plan our days loosely, making adjustments according to weather.

Most days we walk the beach, watching the waves and the surfers.

Sometimes we hike on bluffs where flowers bloom  in profusion.

The ocean both mesmerizes and frightens me.

I'm wary and respectful as Nature reveals itself.

Near sunset one day, I notice a young couple on the beach in their wedding finery.
(Can you see how tiny they are in the vast landscape of the sea?)

I watch them dance to the beat of the waves.

I whisper many blessings to them for a happy and abiding union.

Time to watch and listen and appreciate is my One Good Thing today.

Thank you for visiting.

Questions and Answers

I was getting 5 year old Sam ready to return home after spending a weekend with us.

"I love you, Grammy!"
"I'm going to come live with you when I finish college."

"Well," I said, "that's a really long time from now."

"Will you be dead?" he asked.

"That's possible," I answered.

"But, I'll miss you! How will I find you?" he wondered.

I patted his head and tapped his chest.
"I'll always be in your memories and in the love inside your heart."

Satisfied, he smiled and hugged me again before leaving.

The innocence of children is my One Good Thing today.

Amanda and Ben with little brother Sam.

Our oldest grandchildren celebrate their 15th birthdays in February.
Ben was born 1 minute before Amanda.
They were the first to call us Grammy and Pop Pop.

It's been a joy to watch them grow and mature.
We're very proud of them.

Being Grandparents is another very Good Thing!

Grandparent Time - Small Stone

Our Grandson, Sam, is 5 months old.
He stayed with us for a day last week.
We made faces and danced and sang.
We fed and burped and diapered.
Smiles were our reward.

we knew nothing of caring for babies
barely grown ourselves when twins were born
muddling through exhausting days and nights
longing for a private moment or at least a nap
miraculously we're given this second chance
at baby love

Taking a Walk - Mindful Writing Challenge

the sun warming our faces
we walk a wide boulevard
talking and holding hands
I see us through eyes from my younger years
when I would smile and point and say to my husband
"sweet!"
when I saw an old couple strolling
