This is lovely! I really love 'pewter day' and the delicate feel of 'sifting' and 'quilting.' You know snow so well - perhaps not surprising.
Describing the scene as looking like pewter is wonderful! And the snow is indeed like a quilt, insulating the ground from the often even colder air.
